We watched the Padres play the Giants in San Francisco.
Some thoughts:
*I realize that it was his first start in the NL, that he probably had jitters, that he's a durable pitcher with a great career record, but still...that is not how $126 million pitches. And the worst part is, he isn't even really the reason the Giants lost; their bullpen looked awful.
*If Peavy pitches like that all season, he could legitimately be in the running for the NL Cy Young award. He has good stuff and will hopefully be healthy enough to put it all together: the ERA, wins, and K's.
*I thought that Jose Cruz Jr. was a scrub, but he got some hits and made some pretty tough plays in left field. A Sledge/Cruz Jr. platoon suddenly doesn't sound so stupid.
*Brian Giles had 2 doubles, something that hasn't happened since his Pirates days. If he can find his power stroke, the Padres offense is in for some good times.
*Speaking of the Padres offense, scoring 7 runs on Opening Day in one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in baseball = not too shabby. They were also the hottest (home-run-wise) hitting team in Spring Training.
*Marcus Giles didn't impress nearly as much as his older brother. I don't know how long he'll last in the leadoff spot. That being said, flipping him down to #8 in the order and the LF up to #1 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. It would put about the same OBP at the top of the order and add a little more power to the bottom to collect some RBIs when Greene and Kouzmanoff get on base.
